Audition Requirements

MS Chorus

  • Auditions for this ensemble are done with the student's chorus teacher. Students auditioning for MS Chorus do NOT travel to auditions, and do NOT need to complete the audition permission slip.

  • Prepared Piece: Da Pacem Domine

  • Major Scale using solfege syllables

  • Pitch Matching

  • MS Chorus Audition Form (must be signed by parent prior to audition)

 

MS Jazz Band

  • Scales: District VI MS Band Scales

    • Concert Pitch Ab, Eb, Bb, F, and C, and chromatic

    • memorized

    • articulated according to packet

  • Concert Bb blues scale

  • Prepared piece: You Only Get One Chance

  • Improvisation is encouraged on Bb blues, but not required

  • Drummers must demonstrate rock and Latin beats in addition to the prepared piece

HS Jazz Choir

HS Concert Band

  • Prepared Piece: 2018-2019 District VI HS Concert Band Audition List

  • Major scales: Scale Packet

    • up to and including 3 sharps and 3 flats (not concert pitch)

    • memorized

    • Articulated according to the scale booklet

  • Chromatic scale

    • Play one continuous slur in eighth note triplets the range of the instrument (see scale booklet)

  • Sight reading

    • Short selection from an exercise including key, meter, dynamics, articulation and rhythms

    • Student will be provided ample time to look through the piece before attempting sight reading

PERCUSSIONIST Auditions will include:

  • Specialty instrument performance: snare drum, timpani, or mallets

    • Prepared Piece :2017-2018 District VI HS Concert Band Audition List

    • Technique specific to that instrument (see www.pas.org for examples of rudiments)

      • Snare Drum: flam, ruff, paradiddle, 5 and 9 stroke rolls, long roll (closed)

      • Timpani: long roll with/without accented entrance, long roll showing range of dynamics, tuning to stated pitch from given pitch, tuning to given pitch from undetermined starting pitch. (tone matching)

    • Sight reading

    • Mallet players perform major scales up to and including 3 sharps and 3 flats in two octaves

  • Auxiliary percussion instrument performance (included with the scale booklet)
